SANTA CRUZ Some people need no introduction, and in Santa
Cruz, Neil Young is certainly a member of that club.
When the man who gave the world "Cowgirl in the Sand" was brought
before a crowd at the Del Mar Theatre Thursday evening, he drew a standing
ovation without a mention of his name.
The venerable rocker appeared before the screening of his film "Greendale,"
the opening feature of the Santa Cruz Film Festival, and was introduced to
the crowd by his wife, Peggy, as "Bernard Shakey." Wearing a floppy
brown hat bent Cat-in-the-Hat style, Young grinned broadly, thanked the audience
for coming and almost immediately handed the microphone to his producer, L.A.
Johnson. "Thank you
all for coming. We appreciate it," he said.
"Greendale" is the film version of the rock narrative Young released
on CD last year, the story of a beleaguered family and their eco-warrior daughter.
"Greendale" was shot in and around Half Moon Bay and Pescadero;
Young lives near La Honda.
The screening was a co-benefit for The Bridge School, a Peninsula school for
the developmentally disabled begun by the Youngs back in 1986 to help their
own son. The capacity Del Mar crowd listened politely to Peggy Young, but
many were gazing at the figure in the shadows who as a film director goes
by "Bernard Shakey."
